Deputy Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, Dave Fantle, revealed the 2013 tourism statistics for Dodge County on Monday May 5th at a National Travel & Tourism Week Luncheon at Old Hickory Golf Club.  The good news is that both Direct Visitor Spending and Total Business Sales were up in 2013 over 2012, 5.8% and 4.9% respectively.  While Total Tourism Industry Employment in Dodge County was down less than half of one percent, Total Labor Income was up 1.5% and Total State and Local Taxes resulting from Tourism was up 2.2% in the county.

Fantle also went on to cite several reasons why tourism is very important to Wisconsin’s economy and quality of life:

  • Tourism continues to be one of Wisconsin’s most important economic resources and investing in tourism promotion and marketing at both the state and local level is one of the best things a state can do to attract visitors, enhance the state’s image and keep the economy growing.
  • Travel and tourism is a cash-generating machine for state and local governments. It is the main employer in many communities and in other areas it provides stability and diversity, complimenting manufacturing, agriculture and our knowledge-based sectors.
  • The past three years have been outstanding for Wisconsin’s tourism industry.  Tourism had a $17.5 billion economic impact in 2013, up 4% from 2012 according to research conducted by Tourism Economics and Longwoods International.

Fantle also shared the fun seasonal television commercials the state has been running utilizing the talents of Shorewood, Wisconsin natives and film makers Jerry and David Zucker and Jim Abrahams.  The event was sponsored by the AmericInn and co-hosted by the Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce and the Beaver Dam Rotary Club.
