Obituary: Arthur “Art” John Meyer

Arthur “Art” John Meyer, age 87 of Markesan, passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2014.

Art was born on September 4, 1926, the son of Paul and Mary (Backhaus) Meyer. He grew up in Mayville, WI and graduated from Mayville High School in 1944. He worked for several years at the Marshall Meat Market and farmed in Markesan for 40 years. He married Olive Hotmar on September 15, 1949; she preceded him in death on May 23, 1977. Art and his wife, Dorothy “Dottie” (Kleinschmidt) Martens married on December 9, 1978. They retired in Markesan in 1989 and spent many winters in Kailua Kona, Hawaii and Mission, Texas. They also enjoyed traveling around the country in their motor home for many years.

Art is survived by his grandchildren, Arnold (Deanna) Schulz of Columbus, Vicky (John) Turgeon of Reedsburg and Robert (fiancée Jennifer Meier) Schulz of Janesville; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Alfred of Mayville, Charles of Hayward and Edward of Mayville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Olive and Dorothy; and his sister, Mary Alice Meyer.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Art will be held on Friday, August 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 45 St. Joseph, Markesan with Father Paulraj Sellam Jacob as celebrant. Burial will follow the Mass at Markesan Memorial Cemetery, Markesan.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2014 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 181 S. Main St., Markesan and also on Friday prior to the Mass at church, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
