Obituary: Grace Elsie Hazlewood

Grace Elsie Hazlewood, age 95 of Markesan, passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at the Markesan Resident Home.

Grace was born on June 19, 1919 in the Town of Green Lake, the daughter of John A. and Elsa (Beilke) Frei. On September 28, 1940, she was united in marriage to Ross F. Hazlewood at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairwater. Grace was a secretary for the Markesan School District and also volunteered for hospice. Together with Ross, they ran a family farm. During the summers, they hosted visitors for extended stays to experience farm life firsthand through a Farm Vacations program. Grace was the tireless cook, housekeeper, and always gracious hostess, and several of these families became lifelong friends. Grace was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she enjoyed teaching Sunday School, volunteering with the Zion Lutheran Church Women’s group and being a part of the Fellowship Group. She also enjoyed the time she spent volunteering at the Markesan Resident Home. Grace will be remembered as a woman of sincere faith in Jesus Christ, a faith that shone through her life in her selfless love for family, friends, and many others her life touched.

 Grace is survived by her five children, John “Jack” (Carol) Hazlewood of Brandon, Anne Rasnick of Independence, KS, Mary (John) Siegle of Lynchburg, VA, Jane (James) Soman of Fennimore and Ross A. “Chip” (Lucy) Hazlewood of Markesan; 12 grandchildren, Laura (Tim) Streich, Jandelyn (Michael) Plane, John (Kimber) Hazlewood, Brian (Holly) Siegle, Michele Coghill, Kristin (Stan) Lopeman, Jeffrey (Erica) Rasnick, Rebecca (Dion) Burkholder, Benjamin (Noel) Soman, Peter (Erin) Soman, Sarah (Gentry) Schweiger, Katie Hazlewood; 13 great-grandchildren, Angelisa and Jonathan Plane, Molly Streich, Lee and Anna Siegle, Austin, Emmit and Callum Burkholder, Elizabeth and Aubrey Lopeman, Josephine Soman, Madison Coghill, Makara Rasnick; her siblings, Robert Frei and Phyllis Butros; and further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son-in-law, Cline Rasnick; siblings, Ruth Ott and Frederick “Fritz” Frei and other relatives.

A Funeral Service for Grace will be held on Monday, January 19, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 100 Church St., Fairwater with Rev. Shari Routh officiating. Burial will follow the service at Fairwater Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2015 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 181 S. Main St., Markesan and also on Monday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at church.
