Obituary: Charles M. “Chuck” Hollen

Charles M. “Chuck” Hollen, age 91, died Friday, January 30, 2015 at Marquardt Manor in Watertown, WI.

Chuck was born to Everett and Fern Hollen on June 14, 1923 in Wellington, Illinois. He lived most of his long life in Hoopeston, Illinois.  After graduating from high school, Chuck enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served in Europe in WWII.  He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion for 70 years where he serve as Commander and spent numerous years as a member of the Color Guard. In his early years, he and his wife, Betty, ran the Hollen Grocery Store on West Main Street in Hoopeston. Chuck then worked at the Hoopeston train depot for the C&EI and CSX Railroads for over 30 years. In 2003, he and Betty moved to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin to enjoy their retirement.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife of nearly 66 years, Betty (Riley) Hollen, Beaver Dam, WI; son Stanley (Beth) Hollen, Dellwood, MN; daughter Susan Baldwin, Beaver Dam, WI; son Steven (Brenda) Hollen, Hoopeston, IL; brother-in-law Wayne (Sue) Riley, Hawthorne, FL; eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother George (Betty) Hollen.

Chuck loved gardening, playing cards, traveling, and being with his family and friends. He loved the simple pleasures of everyday life, bringing joy and kindness to everyone who knew him.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 7 at Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston, and a celebration of his life will follow at the American Legion.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 384, 502 East Penn St, Hoopeston, Illinois, 60942.
