Obituary: Eleanor I. Flagel

Eleanor I. Flagel, age 93 of Markesan, passed away on Monday, February 16, 2015 at the Markesan Resident Home.

Eleanor was born on July 26, 1921 in Fox Lake, the daughter of Erwin and Alma (Grahn) Zastrow. She graduated from Markesan High School. On December 21, 1944, she was united in marriage to Wilbert Flagel in Manchester. She enjoyed being an Army wife, having spent time living in San Diego and Orlando. Upon return to Manchester, Eleanor worked at Rhein’s Store, as well as PMI in Markesan. She was also a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church. She enjoyed the time she spent at the Manchester Senior Center, serving as President for 35 years. In her free time, Eleanor enjoyed playing cards, tending to her flowers, and collecting jewelry and antiques. 

Eleanor is survived by her daughter-in-law, Marian (Randall) Flagel-Strelow of Manchester; her grandchildren, Amy (Mitchell) Newton of Markesan, Lisa (Matthew) Poch of Fond du Lac, Laurie Flagel of Menomonee Falls, David Flagel of Yellow Springs, OH and Douglas Flagel of Milwaukee; her great-grandchildren, Hunter, McKenna, Carter and Madelyn Newton; her sister-in-law, Doris Zastrow of Markesan and further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1996; her son, Gary in 2004; her brother, Walter Zastrow; brother and sister-in-law Clarence (Margaret) Flagel and other relatives.

A Funeral Service for Eleanor will be held on Friday, February 20, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, N1521 Hwy 73, Markesan with Rev. Paul Krause officiating. Burial will take place at Manchester Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2015 from 4 – 6 p.m. at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 181 S. Main St., Markesan and also on Friday, prior to the service at church, beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Memorials in Eleanor’s name may be directed to the Faith Lutheran Church Stained Glass Window Fund.
