Obituary: Donald E. “Big Don” Hughes

Donald E. “Big Don” Hughes, 82, Zephyrhills, FL died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015 at Florida Hospital with his family by his side.

Don was born April 9, 1933 in Beaver Dam, WI to Edward and Verna Hughes.  He was an award-winning salesman with Kirby Vacuum and Wynn’s Car Products.  After moving to Florida in 1977, he opened Big Don’s Shirt Shak and later Big Don’s New and Used Furniture and Mattresses in Zephyhills.  Don’s hearty laugh, ready jokes and zest for life was a magnet to others.

Don loved to dance a great polka, travel whenever possible and attend to his family and his flower garden.

He is survived by his spouse of 61 years, Ferne E. (Riddle) Hughes, his children: Dennis (Debbie) Hughes, Cindy Wilk (Frank Hooker), Vicky (Carl) Medlock and Bonnie Allard, 16 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren and his brother Curt (Sharon) Hughes.

Visitation for Don will be held on Tuesday, October 20th from Noon until 2:00 p.m. at the Koepsell-Murray Funeral Home, N7199 N. Crystal Lake Road, Beaver Dam.  Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 20th at 2:00 p.m. at the Koepsell-Murray Funeral Home with the Rev. Christopher Davis officiating.  Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Beaver Dam.
