Russell Schwandt, age 83 of Markesan, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at home.

Russell was born on July 2, 1932 at home in the township of Green Lake to Elmer and Lillian (Mildebrandt) Schwandt. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Manchester. On July 27, 1957, Russell was united in marriage to Joyce Ann Mielke. They were a blessing to each other for 58 years. He was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and school board.

Russell was a hardworking farmer his entire life.  He enjoyed milking cows and growing corn.  He loved driving the tractor and continued to do so until his health failed.  Later in life, he took up gardening where he took pride in growing beautiful red gladiolas for the church altar.  He also liked to share his harvest of tomatoes with friends and neighbors.  When he wasn’t working, he could often be found visiting friends and playing sheepshead.  Family was very important to him and he could be counted on to help in any way that he could.  He and Joyce would go to music shows and Brewer’s games, as well as their grandchildren’s sporting events.  His Christian faith was a very important part of his life.

Russell is survived by his wife, Joyce of Markesan; his children, Betty Schwandt of New London, Nancy (Bob) Kirst of Markesan and David (Ruth) Schwandt of Markesan; six grandchildren, Brian, James and Tanner Kirst, Nina, Evan, and Christian Schwandt; three brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Funeral Service for Russell will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, N1529 Hwy 73, Manchester with Rev. Michael Schierenbeck officiating. Burial will follow at Phelps Cemetery, town of Green Lake.

Visitation will be on Friday, February 12, 2016 from 4 – 7 p.m. at Cornerstone Funeral Cremation Services, 181 S. Main St. in Markesan and also on Saturday prior to the service at church, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
