The first annual “Search for The KING” (Elvis Tribute Artist Competition) will be held at the Waupun Historic City Hall auditorium on May 7, 2016. Elvis Tribute Artists from across the state will compete for $1,000 in total prize money and an opportunity to perform at Celebrate Waupun on Friday, July 2, 2016 or another event in Waupun, WI.

Those tribute artists interested in participating in the competition can find the details and register by going  www.CityHallStage.com  The contest will be judged by a panel of judges who will use a scoring system based on three main categories (Appearance, Vocals and Performance) and fourteen subcategories. There will be two rounds of competition with the qualifying tribute artists singing three songs in both the preliminary round and the finalist round.

Mike Utech, of Appleton, will host the event. Utech has judged, served as Master of Ceremonies, and as a producer of Elvis Tribute Artist competitions in the past. Using his “radio name”, Aaron O’Neal, Utech currently hosts Elvis A-Z, a radio show broadcast on Oldies AM1170 and 103.3FM radio in Waupun on Saturdays at noon. In 2015, Utech produced or hosted ten events at the historic city hall auditorium including Elvis, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Winter Dance Party and CCR tribute shows plus an appearance by Riders in the Sky from Nashville and Billy Branch’s Blues in the Schools program.

“Before Elvis, there was nothing.” John Lennon once said.” Utech, an Elvis fan since 1956, understands that sentiment, at least from the perspective of baby boomers first mesmerized by Elvis hysteria. “The baby boomers were raised on Elvis and it was part of their coming of age as Elvis was coming to be,” he said. ‘And they still enjoy Elvis’s music”.

In Las Vegas, you can’t turn a corner without running into a white jumpsuit clad tribute artist. In Memphis, Elvis Presley Enterprises hosts the largest of all tribute artist contests, drawing artists from around the world and giving away $20,000 to the winner of the “Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist” contest.

Closer to home, Utech is planning the “Search for The KING” competition at the Waupun Historic City Hall auditorium to be held on May 7, 2016. There is no entry fee and all participants will receive a portion of the prize money based on their final placement. Besides the Saturday night competition, plans are in place to hold a kick-off event at the Waupun AmericInn on Friday night, a media meet and greet Saturday morning, and mini-performances at Waupun nursing homes, assisted living facilities and businesses Saturday afternoon.
