Community involvement is an integral component of the project-based learning at the School for Agricultural & Environmental Studies (SAGES). In fact, one of the overarching goals of this K-8 project-based public charter school in Fox Lake is to “…cultivate a community-based learning environment which will also build diverse partnerships and foster local natural resource education, outreach, preservation, and sustainability.” Ranging from area agriculture and environmental experts to local business owners, parents, and retired community members, collaborating partners participate in project implementation and provide expertise and contributions of services and funding.

The opportunity to get involved is now! SAGES is hosting two special events and everyone is invited.

Community “Design Charrette” Workshop

Friday, April 15  – SAGES’ will host a Community “Design Charrette” Workshop from 11:30 am – 12:40 pm at 200 S. Depot Street in Fox Lake. During this event, public input and ideas are being sought related to how the schoolyard gets used for not only play and recreation, but also outdoor learning and exploration. Landscape architects from Ziegler Outdoor Creative (ZDA) will conduct three interactive learning stations allowing workshop participants (SAGES’ students, families, and community members) to learn more about SAGES’ “Living Schoolyard” Master Plan, plus have the chance to provide feedback on features and utilization of the school grounds they’d like to see now and in the future. The workshop/project is possible due to SAGES being awarded a $10,000 “General Environmental” grant from the Wisconsin Environmental Education Board (WEEB) to be used for Phase I of their “Breathing ‘Life’ into our Living Schoolyard” project. Phase I includes refining and implementation of a SAGES’ Sustainable Stormwater Management Plan. This plan will integrate stormwater into the schoolyard’s “Imaginative/Adventure” play areas and provide an Outdoor Classroom to discover, through hands-on activities, the effects of plants and infiltration basins on stormwater runoff.

“Friends of SAGES Banquet & Auction” Fundraiser

Monday, April 18 – SAGES’ Foundation hosts their annual “Friends of SAGES Banquet & Auction” fundraiser from 6:30 – 9:00 pm at the Fox Lake Community Center. The evening includes a catered meal by MJ’s by the Lake, live and silent auctions, raffles, special school presentations, and more! Event proceeds support SAGES Charter School in their project-based educational endeavors. Banquet Tickets are $20 per person or $180 to reserve an 8-person Corporate/Family Table.
