As most of us realize, technology is a big part of our lives and using it in schools on a daily basis has become increasingly more common. At the beginning of the 2016-17 school year, all Beaver Dam Middle School students were given a Chromebook to use at school and home. Chromebooks, which are similar to personal computers, are lightweight, have all-day battery life, are fast and secure, and have a built-in ability to connect to WiFi.

BDMS joins many other schools across the nation in recent years that have gone to one-to-one technology for their students. Students are using their Chromebooks for a variety of classroom activities, assignments, assessments, and projects. Some of the advantages students have because of the Chromebooks include increased communication between teachers and students, more opportunities to research and seek multiple sources, timely feedback on assignments, and easy access to schoolwork.
Teachers and students at BDMS have been exploring the power of the Chromebooks since the start of the school year. This type of technology in the classroom serves as a great tool to enhance the teaching and learning each day. All of our teachers are using the Chromebooks in their respective classes in some way. It’s been a great learning experience for our teachers and students as they continue to find ways to maximize the power of the Chromebook in the classroom.

When asked about the Chromebooks, students often say they like having “access to their assignments more, being able to use it at home is a plus, and it helps them stay organized.” Teachers would say they like the “efficiency, communication and organizational advantage” the

Chromebooks have to offer as they plan daily lessons and activities for their students. Chromebooks have certainly been a big change for our students, teachers, and parents this
year. Teachers and students are excited about the new devices and are becoming more and more comfortable using them. Most importantly, students are building their computer
literacy and are better prepared for the future as a result.
