Obituary: Cora Helen Wollenburg

Cora Helen Wollenburg, age 96 of Beaver Dam, passed away on Friday, April 7, 2017 at the Remembrance Home in Beaver Dam.

Daughter of Alex and Anna (Beyer) Voss, Cora was born on May 12, 1920 at home on the farm in the town of Hubbard, WI. She graduated grade school in a one room school in the town of Hubbard in 1935. Cora graduated from Horicon High School, Class of 1939. Cora worked very hard for most of her life. After high school, she was the hired hand on the Voss family farm on Highway E, south of Horicon, for 10 years. She worked the fields with a team of horses and milked cows by hand. She also worked at the Weyenburg Shoe Factory, Pauly Cheese Company, Lakeview Nursing Home, and in her last years, as a greeter at the Beaver Dam Wal-Mart SuperCenter. 

Cora was blessed to have been a mother, step-mother and wife three times over. She married Clarence Frank Rupnow on June 25, 1949. He died on September 21, 1952 from polio. She had two children from this marriage, Linda (Laurence) Verlinden and Clarence Franklin Rupnow. She then married Merlin Paul Sprotte on May 22, 1965 and three step-children joined the family, Paula Sprotte, Laurel (Leland) Rittenhouse and Joanne Sprotte Webber (Paul Hartzheim). Merlin died on May 18, 1966. She next married George Henry Wollenburg on April 16, 1976, adding two more step-children, Mary Wollenburg and Nancy (Rod) Wollenburg-Kreimeyer. 

Cora loved spending the summers at George’s Fox Lake cottage. She enjoyed traveling to Arizona, Florida and the Badlands, with her fondest memories of Germany and a Hawaiian cruise. 

In addition to her children and step-children, Cora is survived by five grandchildren, Rachel (Troy) Becker, Rebecca (Justin) Schnell, Nathan Verlinden, Bryan  Webber and Dana Webber (Spencer Sennhenn); sister-in-law, Doris Voss and further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cora was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands; seven brothers and sisters, Leonard (infant), William, Lawrence, Clarence, Raymond, Alice and Adeline (infant); sister-in-law, Mildred Voss.

Cora was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and is a member of St. Stephen’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Beaver Dam. May she find eternal rest in the arms of her loving Savior, Jesus Christ, her Lord.

Visitation for Cora will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 135 Keller Blvd., Beaver Dam from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Seth Dorn will officiate. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Beaver Dam and a luncheon will be served back at Cornerstone.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Stephen’s Ev. Lutheran School or Church.
