Wilshire The Fire Dog Wilshire Fire Dog: From Deaths Door To National Hero

Here’s Alan, the Dalmatian Fire Pup, basking in the Sun on National Fire Pup Day.  But why are Dalmatians associated with Fire Departments?
Well . . . years ago, Dalmatians were popular as “carriage dogs,” trotting alongside horse-drawn carriages and guarding both the passengers and the horses.  As a result of their compatibility with horses and their guarding inclination, Dalmatians were “natural” firehouse dogs, back when horse-drawn fire carts were in vogue.  In modern years, the horses have gone, but the Dalmatians remain.
