Obituary – Thorn, A. Joy

A. Joy Thorn, age 73, of Horicon, died on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Hillside Manor in Beaver Dam.

The memorial gathering will be at Murray Funeral Home in Horicon on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM. There will also be a visitation at Grace Presbyterian Church in Beaver Dam on Thursday, October 10, 2013 from 10:00 AM until the time of service. The memorial service will be at the church on Thursday at 11:00 AM with Rev. Christopher E. Davis officiating. Inurnment will be at Oakhill Cemetery in Horicon at a later date.

The former Alice Joy Scrivner was born on November 16, 1939 in Colorado Spring, Colorado to Edmond F. and Elna (Lans) Scrivner. Joy lived her childhood years in Leon, Iowa and attended State University of Iowa, graduating as a registered nurse in 1961. On September 3, 1961 she was united in marriage with Gene Thorn in Leon. She worked at University Hospitals in Iowa City and in 1964 she moved to Waterloo, Iowa where she worked as a nursing instructor at Hawk Eye Tech. In 1966 Joy moved to Moline, Iowa and taught at Black Hawk College and in 1969 she moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa and went back to teaching at Hawk Eye Tech. In 1974, Gene and Joy made their home in Horicon and Joy was the Dodge County Health Nurse, retiring in 1991. Joy volunteered much of her time at the Horicon Marsh Education Center and as a Hospice Nurse. She loved traveling with her husband in their motor home, visiting all lower 48 states. Joy spent her winters at her second home in Mission, Texas and enjoyed playing bridge and golf. Her many talents included sewing, cooking and playing piano. Joy was also a substitute organist for several churches, playing for funerals and church services. Joy was a loyal member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Beaver Dam. Joy faced cancer with dignity and determination.

She is survived by her husband, Gene of Horicon; children, Todd (Jackie) Thorn of Portage and Jamie (Larry) Ulrich of Horicon; grandchildren, Rachel (Brett) Johanen, Mike Kayartz, Mitchell Thorn, Christopher (Breanna) Ulrich and Kayla Ulrich; a brother, Thomas (Georgia) Scrivner; and a sister-in-law, Marlys Sylvester; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Richard (Joan) Scrivner; and a brother-in-law, Don Sylvester.

If desired, memorials may be made in Joy Thorn’s name to the Horicon Area Foundation.
