Obituary: Marvey A. Birr

Marvey A. Birr, 85, of Horicon passed away peacefully on Friday, August 1, 2014 at Hillside Manor in Beaver Dam.

Marvey Anna was born the daughter of Hugo and Lydia (Oehl) Henkel on October 15, 1928.  She was a graduate of Horicon High School.  On September 11, 1948, she was married to Arthur E. Birr at St. Stephen’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Horicon.

Marvey had been employed since Feb. 6, 1966, with the Horicon School District as a secretary for the Elementary and Middle School, retiring after 30 years of service.  Marvey was a lifetime member of St. Stephen’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Horicon; where she was baptized, confirmed and married.  She was a member of the Ladies Guild of the church.  She was also a member of the Horicon Junior Women’s Club, the Bridge Club, and had been the secretary of the Marquis Drum and Bugle Corp of Fond du Lac.  Marvey enjoyed knitting, sewing, and playing games with her grandchildren.  She was also an avid Brewers and Badger fan. 

Marvey is survived by her daughters: Carolyn Birr of Horicon, Sarah (Ray) Teschke of Horicon and Mary (Roger) Schalow of Marshfield; four grandchildren: Christopher Teschke, Amanda Teschke, Jonathan (Lindsey) Schalow and Rachel Schalow and her brother Merlin “Buzz” (Karen) Henkel of Madison. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Arthur in 1981.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Horicon with the Rev. Jonathan D. Szczesny officiating.  A visitation will also be held on Thursday, August 7th from 11:00a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the church.  Inurnment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Horicon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Stephen’s Ev. Lutheran Church or to the Horicon School District.
