This Local Brew Is For You

To Keurig or not to Keurig, that is the question?

We’ve had a Keurig for a couple of years now. It was a Christmas gift to me from the women I share the house with, but I refused to use it for about one year. Why? I didn’t think it was necessary. My Cuisinart brewer makes great coffee. Not just one cup, an entire pot that stays nice and hot for an hour or two.

One cup of coffee is never enough and if it is just one cup, it’s a travel mugs worth before hitting the road. Then there is the aroma…even my coffee hating wife loves the smell of a freshly brewed pot of coffee permeating the house. Try that with a Keurig, nope can’t be done. So, I resisted the allure of the next great beverage making thing…until.

Until that one day, you know the day when you are running late in the morning and don’t have time to brew a pot before heading out for the day. It was time to break out the K-Cup.

Fortunately one of the women in our house already had the machine warmed up and ‘ready’ to brew. They do not drink coffee, but the beauty of the Keurig is its ability to make many types of hot beverages in just seconds. They love Chai latte and hot chocolate from ours. After sorting through the types they bought for me I chose one and popped it in. 30 seconds later, coffee. Ok, so maybe this thing isn’t so bad after all.

It was a little more watery than I prefer and the heat dissipated quicker than I’d like. But hey, it was a cup of Joe To Go. There is nothing quite like a warm caffeinated beverage to start the day.

As time passed, there were more days that required the use of our Keurig and eventually the taste grew on me. The down side, one cup at a time and the expense and disposing of all those darned K-Cups.

Another down side was missing the taste of my favorite blend. Berres Brothers Streusel Cake. They are a Watertown based coffee house. After confessing this disappointment to my wife, suddenly a box of K-Cups with my favorite flavor appeared in the coffee cupboard! Just as suddenly the coffee pot began to collect dust.

Until Christmas time this year. It would not be fair to proclaim a favorite aunt, but let’s just say that if I did have a favorite, she has also fallen in love with Berres Brothers Streusel Cake blend coffee in whole beans. So, I always take a couple of pounds back home with me for her. On a lark I also picked up a bag of beans for home use, dusted off and fired up the Cuisinart coffee maker.

As stated earlier the taste is far superior to the K-Cup method, the beverage stays hotter longer, there are more cups to enjoy and no K-Cups to dispose of. To answer my aforementioned question; not to Keurig whenever possible.

Besides there are so many local places to buy Java. Higher Grounds and Black Water to name just two and of course any local Kwik Trip and many convenience stores in the area carry freshly brewed Berres Brothers coffees. Live life local, that’s what this space is all about and freshly brewed, roasted and flavored locally coffee is the way to start a great day.
