Arthur “Art” W. Egerer, age 95 of Crestwood, IL and formerly of Beaver Dam, Bruce, Ladysmith and Tony, WI, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2016 in Crestwood, IL.
Art was born on June 23, 1920 in Port Washington, WI, the son of John and Josephine (Maier) Egerer. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII stationed in Hawaii during Pearl Harbor. Art was united in marriage to Virginia Evans on October 23, 1948 in Ladysmith, WI.
Art was a man of many trades. He worked as a jeweler, watchmaker, clockmaker, gunsmith, and appliance repairman. He owned and operated his own shop in Horicon. He was an inventor, often crafting the tools needed to do repairs that otherwise could not be done and created the first in-home hose winder. Art built a cabin, and the road leading up to the cabin, on Bass Lake, Weyerhaeuser, WI, a place his family holds many dear memories and continues to treasure to this day. As Art headed into retirement, his work naturally became his hobbies. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and years of flying small engine airplanes around the state with his wife, Virginia. Art was a member of the civil air patrol at the Rusk County Airport near Ladysmith, WI.
Art loved people. His kind heart and knack for storytelling will be deeply missed by his daughter, Therese B. Swiersz of Crestwood, IL., his grandchildren, Brian Swiersz, Arty (Angie) Swiersz and Bernadette (Matt) Schnell; his great-grandchildren, Sophia, Olivia, Jack, Emma, Noah, Brett, Nolan and Henry; his sister, Verna Valley; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Virginia, two brothers, Elroy (Ruth) and Johnny (Eileen) and other relatives.
A memorial gathering for Art and Virginia will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016 from 10:00 until 11:30 a.m. at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 135 Keller Blvd., Beaver Dam. Inurnment will follow at St. Matthias Catholic Cemetery, Fond du Lac County, WI.
