Park Village Shopping Center at the intersection of Hwy 151 and Hwy 33 in Beaver Dam is creating a new tradition. On Saturday, September 10 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., the community is invited to celebrate one of the area’s best kept secrets…the 3rd Annual Beaver Dam Pepper Festival. The festival will feature food, fun, music and crafts for all ages.

The exciting part will be an opportunity to discover the fascinating history of the Beaver Dam Pepper and its origins. “The Beaver Dam Pepper is an heirloom pepper that was introduced to Beaver Dam in the later 1800’s by Hungarian immigrants that smuggled the seeds in the hems of their trousers and dresses. We want to celebrate this great story. This pepper has created a stir among those who enjoy good food and has been celebrated by national organizations like Slow Food,” says Diana Ogle, event coordinator. She adds, “One must savor the taste in order to understand what makes it so special.” Several people who discovered the history of the pepper have been working diligently to bring the community groups and organizations together to host a celebration of the pepper in Beaver Dam where it started. This year the proceeds will benefit the Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre and Downtown Beaver Dam Inc. “Giving back to the community has always been our goal,” says Ogle.

The event begins with a Beaver Dam Pepper and apple pancake and sausage breakfast. Area chef’s and organizations will honor the pepper with savory dishes along with  an apple pepper pie eating contest, an ice cream social, local artists, music, face painting and games for the kids. In honor of Beaver Dams 175th year long celebration, the first 175 folks attending the breakfast will receive  “Pepper Mardi Gra beads” handed out by our special guest Abe and Mary Lincoln. There will also be 50/50 drawings and other give-a-ways all day.
