John Freeby, a boy scout in Troop 724 in Beaver Dam, has chosen the Dodge County Humane Society for his Eagle project. The Eagle rank is the highest rank in scouting and is only achieved by 5% of all scouts. While volunteering at the DCHS shelter, John recognized the need for cats to have more room to play and socialize. He developed an idea to construct a cat play area.
This play shelter will be on wheels so it can be moved between rooms, and used as a display or an extra cage for overflow cats. It will have 3 levels and include litter boxes and toys. Several doors will allow access to all parts of the cage and dividers will be made to block off sections to separate cats or to catch a cat.
The construction of this project is no small feat. It will be about 6 ft. tall, 8 ft. long and 2 ft. deep. For the safety and health of the cats, the frame needs to be made of composite wood. All areas need to be able to be cleaned, making materials costly.
The entire project will cost over $2000. John has been diligently working on fundraising and is ready to begin ordering parts.
