Prairie View Elementary has been recognized as a School of Distinction by the Wisconsin Response to Intervention Center (RtI) and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for their implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

Prairie View Elementary was one of 162 schools in the state to receive this award for the 2015-16 school year. As a School of Distinction, the Prairie View staff received recognition at the annual PBIS Leadership Conference in August, a certificate of achievement, and a banner that has been displayed outside the school office. The recognition as a School of Distinction means the Prairie View staff and students have demonstrated successful implementation of PBIS and increased student learning time and family engagement. This has been accomplished by establishing clear and consistent behavior expectations, acknowledging positive behaviors frequently, and involving parent representatives in decision-making.

The Prairie View PBIS team is currently working on pilot studies for the Wisconsin PBIS Network and is planning to present at the PBIS Leadership Conference in 2017. “Being a part of the Prairie View staff is so rewarding because when something new is implemented, they jump right in and do it with pride and success,” claims Lindsey Poirier, fifth-grade teacher. “I could not be more proud to be a PBIS coach at Prairie View, working with a phenomenal team and being acknowledged for all the hard work that has been put in teaching ou rstudents The Panther Way.”

PBIS is also received well by the students as demonstrated by their willing enthusiasm. “The Panther Way means that I can be respectful, responsible, and safe by working hard, listening, and being kind to my friends,” said
Madyson Rinderele, a second-grade student. “I love Prairie View school!”
About PBIS
PBIS is a process for creating safer, more effective schools by reinforcing positive behavior and preventing and addressing problem behavior. It is a system-wide proactive framework that enables schools to be more effective and responsive to student social and emotional needs by implementing a multi-level system of support for behavior. This proactive and consistent approach to school-wide discipline can lead to improved student achievement. Schools implementing PBIS have seen a decrease in office referrals, detentions, and suspensions.
