Godspell (archaic for Gospel, meaning ‘good story’) is based upon the Gospel of Matthew. The musical opened Off Broadway in 1971, and has been performed on thousands of stages since, including at BDACT twice.
But it’s been 27 years since the Musical Theatre staple has last graced the stage at 219 N. Spring St. Director Ryan Madala-Klug thought that the time had come to bring the good story back to the area.
“‘Godspell’ has always been an enigmatic piece of theatre,” says Madala-Klug. “The premise is that Jesus comes back at a different time and place, but it uses lyrics from hymns from the 17 and 1800s juxtaposed with the musical from the 60’s and 70’s. The show also relies heavily on improvisation and community.”
“The show is going to be high energy, from the very beginning. I can promise you that,” says the director. This show will get people clapping and the cast sweating nearly from the get-go.
