Karl Stewart draws on his ecclectic background to shape his writing. Raised in the hills of post-WWII West Virginia, he proceeded to study for the Catholic priesthood. Having been expelled from the seminary for excessive individualism, he joined the US Army in the late 1960s and became a communications sergeant in the elite Green Beret Special Forces.

Stewart later entered the University of Wisconsin, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree and continued on to earn a Master’s in Education. In 2005 he retired from teaching to devote himself to writing and his family. Presently he and his wife live just outside of Ripon, WI.

Karl has written three books and his last book, The Seventh Cruise, just won an award at the London Book Festival for books deserving a larger international audience. Karl’s first book, The Last Long Drive, is a story that his father told him about his great-grandfather, Seebird Carpenter. Seebird was a Native American but that fact was unknown to Karl until Seebird had passed away. The second book, The Legend of See Bird: Devil’s Backbone, follows See Bird as he drifts into West Virginia and ends up marrying the niece of Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield of the famed Hatfields and McCoys (the young couple’s story is a thriller). The third book, The Seventh Cruise, continues with Karl’s Father, Stu Carter, who was involved in WWII. It is about how Stu’s father gets his son, born and raised in the hills of West Virginia, ready for war.

All three of Karl’s books will be available for purchase at the meeting with the profit from his last book going to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
