NAMI Dodge County is hosting Ending The Silence on Wednesday, October 26 at 5:30 pm. The event will take place at the Beaver Dam Area Community Theater (117 West Maple Ave, Beaver Dam). The event will include free pizza and dessert from 5:30-6:00. The presentation and Q&A will follow from 6:00-7:00

NAMI invites students (ages 13-18), parents, and anyone working with youth to attend this free presentation.

Participating in this program has shown to improve knowledge of mental health among young people. Participants will learn about mental health conditions and hear from young adults about their journey to recovery. Students will also learn warning signs so they can get help for themselves or friends.

Mental Health and Young People

According to NAMI, 1 in 6 young people in the United States (age 12-17) experience a major depressive episode. 3 million teens have had suicidal thoughts. Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in 10 to 24 year olds. 50% of all lifetime mental illness cases begin by 14. There is often a delay in seeking treatment, so it can take 8 to 10 years before young people get help.

Mental health issues in young people also has a large impact on communities. 37% of youth with mental health conditions will drop out of school. 70% of youth in juvenile justice system have mental illness.
