Sunday Tea – November 20, 2022

This morning we went on an expedition. We were arctic explorers so the back staircase became a snow covered mountain. The gate at the top of the stairs was a treacherous mountain path. It was a dangerous adventure, but we survived- barely. And then we went on an expedition to the kitchen, to the living room, and up a few more mountains. “Sing ho for the life of a bear! Sing ho for the expedition!”

It was John (and Pooh Bear) who took us on these expeditions. But the arctic adventure was a throw back to my childhood days of climbing over the snow-plowed drifts and up the big hill to go sledding with my brothers. On the most dangerous of arctic explorations, we’d venture to the little woods behind the house and climb down the slope between the trees. Once we made it to the bottom, we were in a magical land inhabited by trolls and fairies.

It brings me so much joy to see John create a world in our house to explore. When we ask him where we’re going when we set our on an expeditions he says “I don’t know! Come on! Let’s go!” Hopefully someday he’ll look back on his expeditions, remember them as grand adventures, and tell exaggerated stories about the dangers he faced.

In between the wild and exciting world of John’s imagination, we are in full Thanksgiving prep mode. We made a careful list of the things we needed, went grocery shopping, and came home with about twice what was on our list. Naturally, we managed to forget something, which necessitated a trip back to the store.

I think I’m more excited about planning and scheduling this week than I am about the actual holiday. Seriously, I have three different apps plus a Google doc going right now. I’m not going to lie, I’m looking forward to those reminder notifications that are going to start popping up Thursday morning prompting us to put the turkey in and assemble the green bean casserole.

I love the weekend before Thanksgiving. It is the start of our holiday season. Growing up in rural Northern Wisconsin, opening of the gun deer season meant a halt to outdoor arctic explorations. When I wasn’t out hunting, I was inside getting ready for the holidays. The planning for Thanksgiving quickly snowballs into the joy and excitement of Christmas. I have been itching to put up our Christmas decorations since it snowed on Tuesday. Our Black Friday shopping is going to consist of going to Annabelle’s to bring home a Christmas tree and we are excited to see the lighting of Swan Park Friday evening.

The dough for the pie crusts is made and in the freezer waiting to be baked Wednesday. Pumpkin spice cookie dough is mixed up and will go in the oven Tuesday. The cranberries are boiling and popping. Ben and John are making a last run to the store. Baby Ella is playing in her chair. A I am sipping my Sunday tea.

p.s. John just came home with flowers for me 🙂
