An estate-grown, produced and bottled dry red wine from Botham Vineyards in Barneveld, Wisconsin earned a gold medal at the New York International Wine Competition held May 15-16, it was announced in results released today. Botham Vineyards’ 2014 Field 3, an estate-grown dry red varietal made from the Leon Millot grape that grows in field number three of this 10-acre vineyard, is the gold medal winner, confirmed Peter Botham, the vineyard’s founder, president and winemaker.
“Our wines have earned lots of gold medals over the years, but it is rare that an estate-grown, produced and bottled Wisconsin wine is recognized in this way. This is a really special wine and a fantastic example of the wine quality that can be grown and produced here,” he said. “We are pleased and honored to be recognized among such a fine field of entries.”
Field 3 is made only in the occasional years that exhibit exceptional growing seasons and produce grapes of extraordinary quality, Botham said. Just 200 cases were produced in 2014 and the wine is sold exclusively in the vineyard tasting room and at select Madison-area restaurants. It retails for $20/bottle.
More than 1200 wines from 25 countries were entered in the 6th Annual New York Wine Competition and fewer than 100 earned gold medals, according to the competition website. Unlike many other competitions, the New York International Competition wines are judged by experts in the wine trade, including buyers from the top retail stores, sommeliers, restaurant owners, hotel beverage directors, distributors and importers. In addition to its gold medal win for Field 3, Botham Vineyards’ semi-dry Rielsling and Badger Blush earned silver and bronze medals, respectively. Additionally, the competition named Botham Vineyards the Wisconsin Winery of the Year.
