Obituary - Hoch, Harold

Harold A. “Huns” Hoch, age 90, of Beaver Dam, died Sunday, August 4, 2013 at Hillside Manor in Beaver Dam.

Friends and family will gather at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, 511 S. Spring Street in Beaver Dam, on Friday, August 9, 2013 from 9:30 AM to 10:50 AM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at church on Friday beginning at 11:00 AM.  Fr. Michael J. Erwin will officiate.  Private inurnment will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Beaver Dam where the John E. Miller American Legion Post #146 will provide military honors.

Harold Andrew Hoch was born on March 24, 1923 in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin to the late Joseph and Gertrude (Frank) Hoch.  He graduated from Beaver Dam High School in 1941.  Huns served in the 9th Armored Division of the United States Army during World War II from January of 1943 to December of 1945; he served in the European Theater where he saw action in Central Europe, Rhineland and in the Ardennes region during the Battle of the Bulge.  On May 6, 1950, Harold was united in marriage with Carol Mae Neis.  He worked for the US Postal Service for 32 years as Superintendent of Mail, Superintendent of Postal Operations, and retiring on December 30, 1980 as Assistant Postmaster.  Huns was a member of St. Katharine Drexel Parish; he served on the St. Peter’s Cemetery Board and was secretary for 10 years.  He was a Meals-On-Wheels volunteer and router, and served on their board.  Huns was also a member of the American Legion Post #146 and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.  He will be warmly remembered for his wit and sense of humor, his warm smile, and his thoughtfulness.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Carol Mae Hoch of Beaver Dam; four children, Thom (Darlene) Hoch of Beaver Dam, Jerry (Debbie) Hoch of Waukesha, Janice (David) Bilgri of Beaver Dam, and William Hoch of Bozeman, MT; eight grandchildren, Andrea (Gage) Hymas, Justin (Kaytlyn) Hoch, Sarah (Kevin) Yarbrough, Erica (Paul) Ferrini, Julie (Jordan) Kroll, Ben (Sarah) Bilgri, Nick (Anna) Bilgri, and Alex Bilgri; seven great grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Nancy Behrend; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  Harold was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Viola Sautbine and Evelyn Napralla; and two brothers, Arnold and Floyd Hoch.

Memorials may be made in Harold A. Hoch’s name to St. Katharine Drexel School Endowment Fund or to Meals-On-Wheels.

The family would like to thank the staff at Hillside Manor for the kind and loving care they gave to Huns.
