Obituary - Elwood "Joe" Garvin

Elwood “Joe” Garvin, age 87, a life-long Beaver Dam area resident, died Sunday, August 11, 2013 at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.

Visitation for Joe will be at Annunciation Catholic Church, 305 Green Street in Fox Lake, on Friday, August 16, 2013 from 9:30 AM to 10:50 AM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at church on Friday at 11:00 AM with Fr. Michael L. Wild officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Lost Lake where the John E. Miller American Legion Post #146 will provide military honors.

Elwood Joseph Garvin was born on January 30, 1926 in Columbia County, Wisconsin to the late Edward and Agnes (Biel) Garvin.  After graduating from high school, he served in the United States Army during World War II and was later stationed in Guam during the Korean War.  Joe worked for various cheese companies as a field representative for over 24 years.  For over 35 years, he worked for the Town of Beaver Dam doing road maintenance and he also worked for John Schmid hauling milk for different cheese factories.  He was a member of John E. Miller American Legion Post #146, Annunciation Catholic Church in Fox Lake, and he volunteered at the Central Wisconsin Community Action Council Food Pantry and served on their board of directors.

Survivors include three nephews and two nieces, John (Nelda) Machkovech of Beaver Dam, Richard (Kathy) Weinkauf of Mukwanago, Sandy (Denny) Grabowski of Minnesota, Robert Connaughton of Oklahoma, and Marie Garvin of Green Bay; special caretaker, Cindy Scartaro; other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.   Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Earl, and two sisters, Lorraine Connaughton and Virginia Weinkauf.
