Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

Dec 07, 2014 11:22AM, Published by Gene Kirschbaum, Categories:

Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941, and according to FDR, it was a "date which will live in infamy."

The term Pearl Harbor comes from the Hawaiian word "Wai Momi," or "pearl water." The waters around the harbor were once well known for their abundance of pearl oysters.

Of the 18 ships damaged or sunk, only 3 were beyond repair: USS Arizona, USS Oklahoma, and the USS Utah. All other vessels were placed back into service.

Blatant Advertisement: The 2015 Beaver Calendars are available now!  They make a great Christmas gift and can be obtained for only $10 from:  Green Valley, Must-Skis, Family Center/Skating Rink, Seippel Art Center, Chamber of Commerce, and the BDCH Gift Shop.  Or, if you want it mailed, just send a $12 check with the name & address of the recipient to me -- The Beav, 328 Park Ave, Beaver Dam, WI 53916.  I've got a couple of human servants who can handle the mundane mailing details, as long as I supervise them closely. (Note: all proceeds go to non-profit organizations.)
