The term Pearl Harbor comes from the Hawaiian word "Wai Momi," or "pearl water." The waters around the harbor were once well known for their abundance of pearl oysters.
Of the 18 ships damaged or sunk, only 3 were beyond repair: USS Arizona, USS Oklahoma, and the USS Utah. All other vessels were placed back into service.
