Sherwood Frank Henke, 95, of Beaver Dam, entered eternal life on Monday, January 15, 2018, at Hillside Manor, surrounded by his loving family.
The visitation will be at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Beaver Dam on Thursday, January 18, 2018 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow at the church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Bryan Lagerstam officiating. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens in the Town of Trenton, Dodge County, Wisconsin. Military honors will be provided by the John E. Miller American Legion, Post #146.
Sherwood was born the son of Frank and Dorothy (Boettcher) Henke on March 1, 1922, in Milwaukee, WI. He married Alice Louise Huebner on July 3, 1946.
He is survived by five children: Melodylee (William) Lamberton, Kohler WI, Richard (Patricia) Henke, Punta Gorda FL, Vallimae (Douglas) Sternig, FranklinWI, Roxanne (James) Poetter, Greenfield WI, and Ann Marie Walter, Beaver Dam WI; 10 grandchildren, Lisa Lamberton, Nicole (Jesse III) Taylor, Amanda (David) Dionysius, Samantha (Dan) Helmer, Richard (Nikki) Henke II, Shane (Felicia) Henke, Patrick (Haley Rosploch) Sternig, Katherine (Kory) Leistico, David (Angela) Walter Jr., and Jennifer (Derick Schlagel) Walter; 25 great-grandchildren, Ashly (Phil) White, Jesse Taylor IV, Jamari Taylor, Jordan Taylor, Jasmine Taylor, Marysa Henke, Ayden Garcia, Alyse Garcia, Sydney Dionysius, Paige Dionysius, Ella Dionysius, Robert (Emma Westimayer) VanAbel, Bradley VanAbel, Abigail VanAbel, Aleena Henke, Landon Henke, Craig Henke, Kendall Leistico, Kaleigh Leistico, Baby Walter (expected in April 2018),Tori Walter, Alison Walter, Nakhila Schlagel, Brayden Schlagel, Allisandra Schlagel; sister-in-law Jean Henke; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Alice in 2006; his parents; brothers, Wendell and Donald (Geraldine) Henke; daughter-in-law, Jeanette Henke; son-in-law, David Walter Sr; and grandson, Craig Fuller.
Sherwood had been employed at Metalfab, retiring in 1984. He was an active member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and previously volunteered for the Cub Scouts, Meals on Wheels and Adult Day Care Center. He also served as recording secretary for Lincoln School PTA and St. John’s. He served his country in the US Army during WW II with duty overseas in Italy, as a member of the 91st Division, earning the Bronze Star, and receiving a Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medal.
Sherwood was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He gave much to his family and community throughout his life. He especially enjoyed engaging in conversations about various family members’ activities. In his later years, as an avid Brewers, Packers and Bucks fan, he took great pleasure in watching the teams play on television and routinely talking about the games with his family. He will be deeply missed by his family, but they take comfort in knowing he is reunited in Heaven with his wife, the love of his life, throughout their 60 years of marriage.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Hillside Hospice and Hillside Manor for their loving care given during Sherwood’s final days.
